I wrote this tune to set Tolkien's words from "The Battle Of Pelennor Fields" from "The Return Of The King" in 2019. It was deliberately in the mixolydian mode but I wasn't consciously thinking of the pipes when I wrote it. It is either pure luck or some sub-conscious influence but it turned out to be almost exactly the compass of the great highland pipes. There were a few cases where I had used a high B which I had to rethink but overall it was quite simple to adapt it to the pipes where it surely belongs!
The embellishments in this setting are mine and they are NOT generally of the form sanctioned by The Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association. If you are incapable of playing any NEW embellishments you will NOT be able to play this piece. You have been warned!
This is GREAT music. Play it the way I wrote it. Yes, you will need to learn some new embellishments. So what! Take on the challenge and reap the reward!
