Music has been the core of my life since I first picked up a bass guitar and jammed with a mate at 13. For someone who has been composing, playing and singing for over 50 years it is a little surprising that I do not have more professional standard recordings. Dear reader: I am well aware of this short-coming and I am doing everything I can to rectify the situation while I am still alive and well.
There have been numerous blocks placed in front of my dream to get my music out:
- The various ensembles I have played and sung in have all been sabotaged from within by personality clashes, artistic differences, incompetence or destructive dictators.
- Music that I have created to fit someone else's words or words that I have written to fit someone else's music have always run into the refusal of the writer's lawyers to allow my adaptation.
- I have not been able to play some instruments, (such as piano and drums), to professional standard and people do not like the computer synthesised versions I produce with my computer.
- Record companies have shown no interest in my demos despite numerous quality submissions over the years. The recording industry is now dead anyway so this avenue is no longer an option.
- Until recently I have not been able to afford to hire professional musicians to perform my music at the standard the public expect.
- And now, even though I offer them good money, professional musicians, for whatever reason, generally do not respond to my polite approaches. This is weird since most of them need the work. Go figure!!!
- Until recently my only means of distributing my music was via my website which lacked visibility and monetisation.
- etc
Anyway. Excuses are for the weak! I do my best to get around all these obstacles and you can now enjoy the fruits of my attempts via the links you will find on the release pages listed on the left.
My preferred strategy is to fully arrange a project for an affordable ensemble, hire professional musicians to perform it, rehearse them well and record the work in a professional studio. I then farm the digital product out to all the streaming services like YouTube, Apple Music, Spotify etc where you can hear it and I, (and the musicians), can get paid.
That's the theory anyway... It worked well for the 2 albums with Nick Young but he is not available for further projects and I have not been able to find another pianist. I'm at a bit of a loss at the moment as to how to proceed but I'm keeping my eyes out for other opportunities. I've got a stack of material but no one to play it...
In the meantime I'm doing some live recordings of just me and my guitar, singing Australian country and folk songs at various locations around the country. These are unedited, one mic, one camera, no amplifier, raw versions that capture me doing my thing at the simplest possible level. They contain mistakes but they are REAL! You can watch them on YouTube.
I know that people want a full professional recording, and certainly the music deserves that but this is simply not possible at the moment. At least my live acoustic versions present A version of the songs which is surely preferable to NO version at all!
